    Vehicle Overview
Following a face-lift for 2001, Toyota’s front-drive subcompact sedan sees no changes for 2002. A near-twin of the Chevrolet Prizm, which will be dropped after the 2002 model year, the Corolla has been Toyota’s second-best seller behind the midsize Camry. According to Automotive News, Toyota dealers sold 230,156 Corollas during 2000.

A sporty S model slots between the base CE and upscale LE trims. Chevrolet’s Prizm has different styling but uses the same front-drive platform and mechanical components as the Corolla. Both are built at a California plant that the two companies share, but some Corollas are produced in Ontario, Canada. A redesigned 2003 Corolla goes on sale in January 2002 and is likely to have a more youthful appearance.

    Exterior
Equipped with multireflector halogen headlights, the Corolla’s styling is clean but conventional. The S model has color-keyed side moldings, grille and rear mudguards. The Corolla rides a 97-inch wheelbase and measures 174 inches long — just slightly shorter than the Ford Focus and Honda Civic. Four-door sedans are 66.7 inches wide and 53.7 inches tall.

    Interior
The Corolla seats five occupants on cloth-upholstered seats. Compared to some rivals, the Corolla’s standard-equipment list is on the meager side. Even on the top-of-the-line LE, such items as air conditioning and power windows, locks and mirrors are optional rather than standard. In fact, the LE is the only Corolla model that comes with a standard cassette player, as well as a split-folding rear seat, rear-window defogger and tilt steering wheel. None of this seems to deter buyers, who simply check off desired items that are offered in special packages.

    Under the Hood
A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 125 horsepower works with a standard five-speed-manual gearbox or a three- or four-speed-automatic transmission. The three-speed unit is optional on the Corolla CE, while the others can opt for the four-speed automatic.

    Safety
Side-impact airbags are optional on all models, and an antilock brake option is available for only the LE and S editions. Toyota says the Corolla’s bumpers can withstand a 5-mph collision without damage, a claim that some larger cars cannot match.

    Driving Impressions
Despite conservative styling and prices that are higher than those of many competitors, the Corolla is one of the best subcompacts on the market. Toyota’s long-lived sedan delivers an impressive blend of frugal fuel economy, refinement, reliability and durability.

Performance won’t stir emotions, but it’s wholly adequate for ordinary driving, whether the Corolla is equipped with the manual shift or the automatic transmission. Corolla owners can expect easy driving, capable maneuvering and a smooth ride in a sedan that’s quieter than some larger automobiles.

    • I’ve had this car for almost 10years now.

Got a great deal on this car back 2012 with only 40k miles on it. I’ve done a cross country trip in it, driven on the beach, in the snow, ice, driven to the Rockies. Handles sooo well. I’ve never had a problem besides normal maintenance. It’s zippy, and tiny. I’d say if you’re a bigger person it’d be uncomfortable, fortunately I’m small. No blind spots, easy to customize. Good, safe, reliable. I’ve been hit by a truck in it, I was fine, car was okay. Just needed a new light and axle wheel and rim and fender, alignment. Only complaint is how the door handles dry rot in the sun and break too easily. #florida. It is now 2021 and I have 118k on her.
    • One of the best cars I've owned to date!

I have owned a few cars but this one surpasses them by far. I got this car used with only 84,000 miles on it and so far it is a great commuter car. Everything works as it should. I own the 98 model which was the first of this style to come about. I think eventually i will end up changing the front end to look like the 01 because i think it looks a lot more modern. The interior of the car is outstanding, I haven't seen a corolla with torn or worn seats yet. They seem to be super strong in quality. When driving in the car the outside noise is barley audible. The car isn't a race car but it isn't a turtle either. You can easily get up to speed and get on your way. One thing that bothers me is the cup holder in the front. It gets in the way of the audio system but thats a minor detail. Another thing that is just annoying the the seat belt light blinks always. I guess it's a common issue with these cars so I'm not too worried. Toyota promises it doesn't effect the mechanism one bit. One thing that I have noticed is that for an older car it has held it's value pretty well. It's still worth over 4 grand for a well kept corolla. The little features like the fading dome light is a cool touch along with the automatic head lights. Overall I would suggest taking the corolla into consideration when on a budget or just looking for a great reliable little car. My very first car was a 1990 corolla and it was super old but being well maintained it never let me down. Best of Luck with your corollas!
    • This is a work horse. Reliable and Predictable

I use this car to commute from Palm Desert to San Francisco and have made 13 trips so far. I can almost get there on one tank of gas, 40+ miles to a gallon. I currently own a Lexus and a Mercedes, but this Corolla is the one I take on long trips. Bought the car when it had 37K miles and currently have 100K miles, and still going strong. I love it when I pass by so many gas stations en route to San Francisco that are selling gas at inordinate prices as I filled up my tank cheap at Costco, before leaving home. Toyota is the BEST car on the road...bar none.
