    FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
    2001 Toyota Corolla

    Vehicle Overview
Toyota tries to make its front-drive Corolla more appealing to young buyers by giving it a face-lift and a sporty S model. The subcompact Corolla sedan got an early jump on the model year when sales of ’01 models started in May 2000.

The S model fits between the base CE and the upscale LE. Last year’s cheapest model, the VE, is gone.

Chevrolet sells a clone of the Corolla as the Prizm, which has different styling but uses the same front-drive platform and mechanical components. Both are built at a plant the two companies share in California. Some Corollas sold in the United States also are built in Ontario, Canada.

Toyota’s current plans call for the Corolla to be redesigned for the 2003 model year, when it is expected to get more youthful styling.

    Exterior
This year’s face-lift encompasses a new front fascia, multireflector halogen headlamps, a lower front bumper and chrome trim, and new taillights. The new S model adds color-keyed side moldings, grille and rear mudguards.

The Corolla is 174 inches long — about an inch shorter than the Honda Civic or Ford Focus.

    Interior
The Corolla’s standard equipment is skimpy compared to some rivals. Air conditioning and power windows, locks and mirrors are optional even on the top-of-the-line LE, which is the only model that comes with a standard cassette player.

All models seat five. The S and LE come with a remote trunk release and a 60/40 split rear seat that expands the trunk’s cargo capacity to 12.1 cubic feet.

    Under the Hood
All models use a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 125 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard across the board. A three-speed automatic is optional on the CE, and a four-speed automatic is optional on the S and LE.

    Safety
Side-impact airbags are optional on all three models, and antilock brakes are optional on the S and LE. Toyota says the bumpers can withstand a 5-mph collision without damage — a claim some larger cars and even some trucks can’t make.

    Driving Impressions
The Corolla is one of the blue-chip models in the small-car segment, offering an impressive blend of economy, refinement, reliability and durability that is hard to beat. The engine delivers snappy acceleration, the ride is smooth, and the Corolla is quieter than several larger sedans.

Conservative styling and a bland image, however, have steered young buyers away from the Corolla to cars such as the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta and Ford Focus. Image aside, this is still one of the best subcompacts on the market.

    • One of the best cars I've owned to date!

I have owned a few cars but this one surpasses them by far. I got this car used with only 84,000 miles on it and so far it is a great commuter car. Everything works as it should. I own the 98 model which was the first of this style to come about. I think eventually i will end up changing the front end to look like the 01 because i think it looks a lot more modern. The interior of the car is outstanding, I haven't seen a corolla with torn or worn seats yet. They seem to be super strong in quality. When driving in the car the outside noise is barley audible. The car isn't a race car but it isn't a turtle either. You can easily get up to speed and get on your way. One thing that bothers me is the cup holder in the front. It gets in the way of the audio system but thats a minor detail. Another thing that is just annoying the the seat belt light blinks always. I guess it's a common issue with these cars so I'm not too worried. Toyota promises it doesn't effect the mechanism one bit. One thing that I have noticed is that for an older car it has held it's value pretty well. It's still worth over 4 grand for a well kept corolla. The little features like the fading dome light is a cool touch along with the automatic head lights. Overall I would suggest taking the corolla into consideration when on a budget or just looking for a great reliable little car. My very first car was a 1990 corolla and it was super old but being well maintained it never let me down. Best of Luck with your corollas!
    • I’ve had this car for almost 10years now.

Got a great deal on this car back 2012 with only 40k miles on it. I’ve done a cross country trip in it, driven on the beach, in the snow, ice, driven to the Rockies. Handles sooo well. I’ve never had a problem besides normal maintenance. It’s zippy, and tiny. I’d say if you’re a bigger person it’d be uncomfortable, fortunately I’m small. No blind spots, easy to customize. Good, safe, reliable. I’ve been hit by a truck in it, I was fine, car was okay. Just needed a new light and axle wheel and rim and fender, alignment. Only complaint is how the door handles dry rot in the sun and break too easily. #florida. It is now 2021 and I have 118k on her.
    • This is a work horse. Reliable and Predictable

I use this car to commute from Palm Desert to San Francisco and have made 13 trips so far. I can almost get there on one tank of gas, 40+ miles to a gallon. I currently own a Lexus and a Mercedes, but this Corolla is the one I take on long trips. Bought the car when it had 37K miles and currently have 100K miles, and still going strong. I love it when I pass by so many gas stations en route to San Francisco that are selling gas at inordinate prices as I filled up my tank cheap at Costco, before leaving home. Toyota is the BEST car on the road...bar none.
