    FRONT WHEEL DRIVE
    2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

    Vehicle Overview
Chrysler says the front-wheel-drive PT Cruiser blends the elements of a sedan, wagon, sport utility vehicle and minivan. Four trims are available: base, Touring, Limited and GT. A new PT Cruiser Convertible went on sale in spring 2004 as a 2005 model.
(Skip to details on the: PT Cruiser Convertible)

    Exterior
The PT Cruiser vaguely resembles a panel truck of the 1930s, overlaid with street-rod styling from the 1950s. Bulging fenders; fender-mounted headlights and taillights; and a tall, wide eggcrate grille help give the PT Cruiser its unique look. Another distinctive feature is its basic stance, which makes the wagon look like it's leaning forward. Built on a 103-inch wheelbase, the PT Cruiser is 168.8 inches long overall and 63 inches tall.

A liftgate-mounted spoiler is standard on the GT and optional on the Limited. The potent PT Cruiser GT has a larger, lower grille opening for its air-to-air intercooler. Additional GT features include a large-diameter chrome exhaust tip and all-season performance tires on 17-inch chrome wheels.

    Interior
Up to five occupants can fit inside the wagon's versatile interior. Two bucket seats are installed up front and a 65/35-split folding rear bench holds three. Outboard passengers have adequate space, but the center rear position is cramped.

Removing the rear seat expands cargo volume from a moderate 21.9 cubic feet to a sizable 64.2 cubic feet. The front-passenger seatback folds flat, leaving enough space to haul an 8-foot ladder. Performance seats, silver cluster gauges and a satin silver gearshift knob are included in the GT.

    Under the Hood
The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder in the wagon PT Cruiser produces 150 horsepower. Two turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinders are also offered; they produce either 180 hp or 220 hp. The 180-hp engine comes only with a four-speed-automatic transmission, but the other power plants can mate with either the automatic or a five-speed manual. The automatic in the 220-hp PT Cruiser GT incorporates AutoStick manual gear selection.

    Safety
Antilock brakes are standard on the GT and available on other trim levels. Side-impact airbags for the front seats are standard in the GT and Limited editions and available in other models.

    Driving Impressions
Only a few cars make a visual statement that's as strong as the PT Cruiser's proclamation. Imaginative and distinctive styling may be the main attraction, but the PT Cruiser's roomy and flexible interior keeps buyers interested.

Though the base-engine PT Cruiser is far from overpowering, its performance is more satisfying than some critics suggest. Throttle response is rapid, even if the action that follows is a little lackadaisical. As expected, the high-output turbocharged GT delivers extra performance.

The PT Cruiser's terrific handling is confident and nimble. This wagon maneuvers with utter crispness and can take corners with impressive speed. Body lean in curves is moderate, and the stable PT Cruiser is exceptionally easy to drive.

    PT Cruiser Convertible
Introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible went into production in early 2004 as a 2005 model. Styling features include a broad sport bar above the passenger area.

Convertibles come in base, Touring and GT trim levels. The split folding rear seat is the same height in both the convertible and wagon and provides theater-style seating.

A normally aspirated 150-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder and two turbocharged four-cylinders rated at 180 hp and 220 hp are offered in the convertible. A five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic are available. Standard equipment includes a powered convertible roof, a rear window defroster and a security alarm.

The convertible's driving characteristics are nearly identical to the solid-roofed PT Cruiser; the soft-top model yields a supremely sweet experience. The thick roof bar doesn't detract from the pleasures of the sun. A top-down GT with an automatic performs and handles with a light touch, responding friskily to the throttle. Rearward visibility with the top up is somewhat limited but acceptable, and the roof goes up or down easily. Nearly no wind annoyance is evident, at least at lower speeds. Back to top

    • My PT WAS very reliable 24 YEARS

2002 Ltd Inferno red live in mtns/snow country. 170K miles, bougjt new with all options. Paid 20K in 2001. Yesterday I had to say Goodbye to my car because it was totaled while sitting in my driveway during a 2 inch sized hailstorm and the insurance company would not Repair it for$3,700. Could have bought it back, but it was beginning to have an issue with a battery drain. That was not caused by the battery. I suspect I had worn out. My Ignition. Unit so that it wasn't shutting off all the way. Several times in its life, it has overheated and blone radiator juice out of the firewall mounted reservoir, and this has always been when it has. I've been idling a long time.Especially in summer. I think all the head gasket problems could have been avoided if people were more diligent about watching their gauges. I love the car so much because my 2 little dogs can jump into it from the rear easily, and yet it's high enough to deal with the snow. Mine had the sunroof although I didn't use it much. I was amazed that the gaskets around it. We're perfect after 20:04 years. Even though the last five years, it hasn't been garaged. What's not to love about that interior though, all the white light colors and the colored Oval dash thingies. I had just gotten the hood repainted, because the Sun had peeled off the clear coat but didn't mind a bit, I think I was getting 25M. PG after I put some Catalytic converter cleaner in it, but most of the time, it was a solid 22. Like everybody else, oh, forgot to tell you. Mine was a manual. I think they're worth considering if you're looking for a car for your kid or just inexpensive runabout, there's so much storage space in those things that it took me two hours yesterday to clean everything out. Loved that you could move that rear panel into the top slot and put a small barbecue on there and have the hatch. Keep the rain off. I never had the rear seats up, and I always had the front seats, it's covered with sheepskin. So I never appreciated the beauty of the Gray leather and suede combo, but it looked like new yesterday when I emptied the car out to sadly have the savage people hauled away. Due to the hail damage.
    • HOT ROD PT CONVERTIBLE

I am fortunate to own one of the rarest versions of the PT Cruisers on the planet. I have searched extensively for one like what I have and returned empty-handed. Now that I have set up the scene and perhaps have your attention, I have a 2006 PT Convertible GT, High Output 2.4 Ltr, with a 230 HP turbocharged engine. The body is HOT ROD RED with a black top, and the special factory chrome wheels are valued at 500 each, which are out of production at this time. I make sure I have wheel locks. Despite what people say, it handles like an actual sports car, easily capable of breaking the front wheel loose on dry surfaces if you are dumb enough to want to do it. I tested several times on the freeway, maneuvering around road obstacles like tire Alagators (Instead of panic braking and maintaining complete control of my PT, at 70 MPH. Regarding cargo carrying capacity, there is plenty of storage in the back seat to load it up with a SAMS Hall with the top down. I did not mention the mileage, which was 36,000 when I purchased it, and now it is around 50,00. I run a special oil that can easily go 10,000 miles between changes, which I rarely do. The bottom line is that if you pull up next to a Red and Black PT convertible like mine and think you want to test it from 0 to 60 mph, you ought to think twice, and you better be packing some heat with what you are driving. So far, I have only had to replace the radiator fan assembly on this car fortunately as I live in FL.
