2006 Acura MDX
Vehicle Overview
Acura introduced its MDX as a 2001 model. Before long, the midsize sport utility vehicle from Honda's luxury division began to tally impressive sales totals. Shoppers even faced waiting lists for the car-based seven-passenger MDX, which is loaded with luxury features.

Built on the platform used for the previous-generation Honda Odyssey minivan, the MDX is manufactured in Ontario, Canada. It competes against such rivals as the BMW X5, Lexus RX 330 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

XM Satellite Radio became standard for 2005, and all models equipped with Acura's navigation system got General Motors' OnStar communication system. The navigation system was enhanced to include additional voice commands, and the Touring Package got HandsFreeLink phone operation, which allows a compatible mobile phone to be used as a hands-free car phone. Acura's Vehicle Stability Assist electronic stability system was enhanced.

Touring Package models for 2006 have an ebony-colored zebra wood pattern on the console and door switches, as well as refined satin chrome accents. Under new testing standards established by the Society of Automotive Engineers, the MDX's 3.5-liter V-6 is now rated at 253 horsepower.

Exterior
Styled in California, the MDX features sloping rear roof pillars like those on the RX 330. According to Acura, its SUV "strikes a balance between muscularity and elegance," starting with a sharply chiseled front fascia and a wide stance.

Bold creases highlight the hood and bodyside panels, and the grille is similar to the one used on Acura's sedans. The MDX has 17-inch alloy wheels and is equipped with a four-wheel-independent suspension. Riding a 106.3-inch wheelbase, the MDX measures 188.7 inches long overall and stands 68.7 inches tall.

Interior
Seven people occupy three rows of seats in the MDX, which has two front buckets, a three-place split middle bench and a two-place split rear seat. The center and rear seats fold flat into the floor to create additional cargo space. Cargo volume measures 81.5 cubic feet when the second- and third-row seats are folded flat. Standard features include leather upholstery, remote keyless entry, a power moonroof and a seven-speaker cassette/CD stereo system.

Under the Hood
Acura's 3.5-liter V-6 generates 253 hp and 250 pounds-feet of torque and teams with a five-speed-automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard.

Safety
Dual-stage front airbags, side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain-type airbags for all three rows of seats are standard. All-disc antilock brakes are installed.

Driving Impressions
Acceleration in the MDX is energetic, though a tad sluggish at first. Handling with a somewhat tight feel, the MDX comes across more like a performance model than a relaxed highway cruiser. The MDX grips the pavement tenaciously in curves.

Because the suspension is quite firm, the ride is close to luxurious on smooth pavement but less refined when the surface becomes even moderately rough. The seats are exceptionally supportive, and occupants have plenty of space. Other than a hearty roar during acceleration, the MDX operates quietly.

  • Can't sell it, great suv!

    5.0
I've been looking at buying a new car and just don't feel like many of the new cars are much of an upgrade to my MDX. I bought this car with 90k miles on it, it now has 209k. In that time, I've only had to put an EGR valve in and do routine maintenance. There is a clunking in the front end now but that's pretty much a given on Michigan roads for high mileage cars. It seems like my friends and family always have their car in the shop but I'm confident in mine. The AWD and traction control gets this car through the snow without a problem. I've almost forgotten that snow is a problem for some people. Sound system is great. The car drives as smooth as silk, even with its high miles. The only thing that I don't like about this car is the gas mileage and the fact that it must be run on premium. Also there have been a few times that the stability control has involuntarily braked on dry pavement recently.
  • 192K miles with normal maintenaince!!

I bought this car new in 2004, it currently has 192K miles on it and all I have had to do is the normal scheduled maintenance. Just finishing up on third set of tires and still get the average gas mileage as when new. If you take care of this car it will last a long time and won't break your wallet to maintain.
  • GOOD, BUT...

    3.0
Loved it initially then had several issues hit right near warranty expiration date: electrical issue with interior lights (covered), fuel injector system/valves (?) replaced twice (covered both times), rear AC unit went out (replaced at my cost), rear view mirror fell off and had to replace entire system at my cost, towing package electrical system went out and argued to get Acura to replace at their cost, and the biggies- we're on the 2nd transmission and 1 torque converter despite having the towing package installed and maintaining vehicle according manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule and towing far below the vehicle's capacity for only 2 years. That being said, the MDX's HP did a great job pulling the light load and up even steep boat ramps when locked in 4WD. The good news- Acura covered the transmissions at their cost both times despite being beyond warranty but boy, what a nuisance. Moving on to another vehicle before this one ends up costing me more than it is worth as it begins to self destruct. Despite issues, enjoyed the vehicle for over 100K miles but need something more reliable where it is easier to access the 3rd row with 2 car seats in place in 2nd row when transporting additional passengers. Yup- the dreaded minivan. MDX was great for the 2 of us then 4 of us but only folks with short legs who are nimble can get to that 3rd row easily and stay there comfortably for longer trips especially when you have any cargo in back.
